Senior Training Captain & Examiner

Founder & Course Director

Captain Graeme Perry, founder of Elevate Flight Leadership, began his aviation career at age 19 as a commercial pilot and flight instructor in Christchurch, New Zealand.

At 21, he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force and was streamed to No. 75 Squadron flying the A-4K Skyhawk. He later completed the RNZAF Flight Instructor Course, becoming an A Category Instructor and Operational Flight Commander responsible for training fighter lead-in students and operational pilots.

Following his military career, Captain Perry transitioned to airline operations, flying the Boeing 757 and 767 with Royal Brunei before joining Emirates Airline in 2000. He gained command on the Boeing 777 and went on to serve as a line and simulator instructor. Over his airline career, he accumulated more than 17,000 flight hours, including over 10,000 hours in command on the B777, retiring from Emirates as a Senior Type Rating Instructor.

He now contracts to Boeing as a B777 simulator instructor, conducting check and training duties for a major Asian carrier.

Why Elevate Was Created

Throughout his training career, Captain Perry observed significant variation in how airlines prepare First Officers for command.

Some provide structured developmental pathways.

Many rely solely on left-seat transition training, expecting command capability to be absorbed rather than deliberately developed.

Recognising this gap led to the creation of the Command Transition Course — a competency-based program designed to support First Officers in making the behavioural and mindset shift required for airline command.

Further experience within modern Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) environments revealed another challenge: competencies are frequently assessed rigorously, yet structured competency development is not always provided in parallel.

This insight led to the development of the Advanced AirCrew Competency Course, strengthening behavioural performance architecture for both Captains and First Officers.

Additional classroom programs and instructor competency development courses have since expanded the Elevate portfolio.
